Four-Mile Campground

Fitzgerald River National Park, Hopetoun

See route

580 km from Perth
Level: Beginner - Medium (most amentities)

Ideal for water babies and plant lovers!

Four-Mile Campground sits right on the edge of Fitzgerald River National Park, one of the greatest national parks in the southern hemisphere, and just 15 minutes-drive from the coastal hamlet of Hopetoun.

The park is home to crystal blue water, white sand, protected rock pools, dramatic costal scenery, and one of the most diverse concentrations of plant life in the world.

There are 1,900 species of plants in the park and from late August to late October they put on a wildflower display that will blow your mind. For context there are only 1,600 plant species in the whole of the United Kingdom.

Four-Mile campground itself is functional for a range of camping styles and the sealed road down the middle of the campground makes all the sites easy to access for every vehicle type and is perfect for bikes and scooters.

There are drop toilets, plenty of barbecues, a hot shower (but no drinking water) and the glorious Four-Mile Beach is only a three-minute walk away.

There are also numerous trails for day hikes and the Hakea Trail along the coast has an overnight option.

While the site itself is a little lacking in ‘nature vibe’, it is a great launching pad for some of the best beaches, walks, and nature experiences you will find anywhere and close enough to Hopetoun to be able to nip into town for an ice cream.

Insider Info

  • The beaches are amazing! Bring bathers, beach umbrellas, snorkelling and fishing gear. Be aware that there are quite large tides and some of the beaches are exposed to swell and wind.
  • Thinks shade! There are amazing plants in the park but not many shade treeS

  • Bring a peg mallet - the campsite ground is quite hard
  • Bring your own drinking water and plan to take all your rubbish away with you

  • Be snake aware, particularly in spring and summer
  • Check for road closures. The unsealed roads and four-wheel drive tracks in the park are sometimes closed after heavy rains to stop the spread of dieback. Call the Ranger to check.

In the Area...

Four-Mile Beach

A long bay that is open to the swell to east and protected by a rocky reef system to the west.

There is beach fishing to be had at the open end and beautiful protected swimming and snorkelling to the west leading around to Barren Beach.

East Mount Barren

A picturesque mountain that rears up behind the campground. A short drive out of the campground takes you to a walking trail all the way to the top.

Allow at least two hours for the walk and more if you are walking with children. The climb is a little steep in sections but achievable for adults with moderate fitness and capable children. More detail here.

Hakea Walk trail

This spectacular trail along the coast at the eastern end of Fitzgerald River National Park can be walked in small sections, or do the whole 23km over two or three days. More detail here.

(Adopt a safety mindset: pause and consider risks as a family before heading into the bush. Be weather aware, take water, wear sturdy shoes, stay together when walking in the bush, stay on the trails, and make note of landmarks to avoid getting disoriented.)
